St. Joseph County Shelter
“My son and I lived in fear, and my husband controlled everything I did. I had no access to finances, transportation, or work. When I tried to gain a little independence by getting my driver’s license, my husband found out and physically attacked me. The police who came that night told me about the YWCA. I said yes, that’s where we want to go.
"One year later, my life is so different. I’m on the path to homeownership, I have a full-time job, and my son is thriving in school and enjoying football. I now own a car, have a bank account, and life insurance—all thanks to the financial literacy classes I took at the YWCA. The YWCA is my safe place. It helped me build a better life. Everything you need is here—you just have to want it.”
